Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives State Minister Mir Shah Alam has issued a stern warning that no form of extortion will be tolerated in connection with the upcoming Qurbani animal markets.

He made this statement on Wednesday (May 6) morning after inspecting the Gabtoli cattle market in Dhaka.

The State Minister announced that swift legal action would be taken if any incidents of extortion occur during animal transportation or market management. He stated, “The government will maintain a strict stance to prevent extortion on roads during the movement of Qurbani animals.”

He further mentioned that plans have been put in place in advance to control traffic congestion and maintain discipline during the upcoming Eid al-Adha. As part of this, setting up animal markets beside railway lines and roads has been completely prohibited.

Regarding security arrangements, the State Minister informed that law enforcement agency members will be on duty at the markets. Additionally, personnel from the Bangladesh Police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and the Army will also be present in the field.

He also stated that market leaseholders (ezaradars) would have their own volunteer teams. These volunteers will work to maintain discipline in the markets and assist the public.

Mir Shah Alam said that initiatives are being taken to implement recommendations from various parties. As part of this, watchtowers will be installed in market areas, and special measures will be adopted to prevent counterfeit currency.

He expressed hope that discipline would be maintained in the upcoming Qurbani markets due to the government’s strict stance.
