Prime Minister Tarique Rahman commented that the July Uprising is not the achievement of any single party or individual, but rather the collective accomplishment of democracy-loving and peace-seeking people. At the same time, he expressed his determination to ensure justice for those involved in the July killings.
He made these remarks while addressing as the chief guest at the ‘July National Conference’ and memorial meeting held on Saturday (July 4) at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (China-Bangladesh Friendship Conference Centre) in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka.
The Prime Minister became emotional listening to the reminiscences and painful experiences of losing loved ones shared by members of martyred families at the event. At one point, he was seen shedding tears during the speeches of several members of the martyred families.
The Prime Minister stated, “The July Uprising is not of any party or individual. It is the achievement of democracy-loving and peace-seeking people. This sacrifice of the nation’s people will forever remain memorable in the history of the country.”
Recalling the difficult times of his political life, he said, “Seventeen years ago, I was forced to leave the country. Upon my return, I found that many of my colleagues were no longer here. Many of those I left behind in Chhatra Dal (student wing) could not be found. Some have passed away, and others have been victims of persecution.”
Tarique Rahman said that various injustices had been inflicted upon his family and the people of the country over the past 17 years. However, he stated that he does not believe in the politics of revenge.
He said, “Allah may have given me the power to seek revenge, but I do not wish to take revenge. I want justice to be established.”
Regarding the July killings, the Prime Minister said, “Those involved in these killings must face justice. However, care must also be taken to ensure that no injustice occurs in the name of justice. Even if it takes time, fair and impartial trials for the real culprits will be ensured.”
The event was jointly organized by the ‘July 24 Martyred Family Society’ and ‘We Are July Warriors’ on the occasion of the second anniversary of the historic July Mass Uprising.
During the event, several family members of martyrs killed in the mass uprising came onto the stage to share their painful memories of losing loved ones. When one martyred mother broke down in tears while speaking of her son’s sacrifice, an emotional atmosphere filled the auditorium. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, seated in the front row, was also seen wiping away tears, alongside the attending audience.
Expressing deep respect for the members of the martyred families, he said that the nation would never forget their sacrifices, and the government would continue to work towards realizing the dreams of the martyrs.
